Yesterday, Markos released another poll showing our campaign just 4 points behind John Cornyn in the race for U.S. Senate here in Texas (Noriega 44% -- Cornyn 48%). Again, John Cornyn is polling below 50% -- a danger sign for any incumbent.
First, I want to thank you all for your continued support and for carrying us to victory this past Tuesday.
The netroots was instrumental in launching my campaign last summer and keeping up our momentum through the primary election. Thanks to your help, I am the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Texas, and I know we wouldn't have made it this far without your dedication from the start.
As we saw on Tuesday night, Texas is changing: we've seen voter turnout in this election like this never before. Our campaign received more votes (1.1 million) than John Cornyn, a clear sign that many people in our great state are yearning for a change -- a distinct change from the Washington policies of Bush and Cornyn that Texans know just aren't working.
Yesterday I kicked off a three day campaign tour across South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley, the most Democratic region of Texas, as part of my campaign for the United States Senate. I'm traveling to over a dozen cities, across two dozen counties, on over 700 miles of highway in 72 hours to bring our campaign for change to the people of Texas.
Yesterday morning I held a breakfast in Corpus Christi hosted by my fellow State Representative Abel Herrero. Here's a video of the speech I gave there.
Just a few weeks ago at the State Capitol in Austin, where I have been honored to serve the people of Texas in the House of Representatives since 1998, I announced my exploratory committee to run for the United States Senate. Texas bloggers encouraged me to run by starting a Draft Rick movement back in the spring and I've received strong support from 48 of my Democratic colleagues in the Texas Legislature.
I have been truly gratified and humbled by the response I’ve received, from all across Texas and this great country.
